Infinite Possibilities

Acrylic on Stretched Canvas, 2016

My artwork explores the possibilities of our future. The painting consists of a blank pyramid in a galaxy painted with black, blue, red, and white acrylic paint. The blank pyramid symbolizes time and is placed in a galaxy, where space is infinite. This painting is influenced by the abstract and hard edge painting style used by artists in the 50’s and 60’s, such as Frank Stella and John McLaughlin. Shape, form, colour and line are used to create a composition that can’t be captured by a photograph, it must be created by hand. I simplified the painting by creating space in order to draw attention to the pyramid. The hard edge taping technique is used to bring out the sharp edges and form of the pyramid. This technique provides an intense contrast in colour between the pyramid and galaxy. The mix of colours in the galaxy represents a combination of emotions and energy that I felt as I was painting. The blue represents a sense of calm and peace, the red represents warmth and comfort, and the black represents strength and power. The pyramid is white to represent the blank canvas of our future – it is yet to be defined.
